Welcome to Where in the World Can We Eat in San Diego! Each month, we’ll be trying food from a different country or place, going in alphabetical order by the beginning letter.

For March, we’re on the letter B. I (Jenne) chose B is for Belgium, because the Belgians invented french fries, and french fries are one of my favorite things in life.

The Fry Fix

What we ordered:

Well, it’s not a large menu! You can have plain fries, with aioli or ketchup for dipping, or you can have truffle fries with Parmesan. There are also waffles available, but it didn’t look like they were making them to order, and everyone else was getting fries, so that’s what I got.

My god, these were delicious. They’re about 1 cm thick, so they’re sort of in between steak fries and thin fries. They are crispy outside, fluffy inside, and hot right out of the fryer.

The aioli is also lovely, full of garlic and pepper, and since I’m not really a ketchup person it was an easy choice! I’m guessing you could probably get both if you wanted.

Notes:

You can find the Fry Fix at the Vista Farmers’ Market on Saturdays from 8 am to noon (fries for breakfast? yes.), and at the Leucadia Farmers’ Market on Sundays from 10 to 2.

I drove up to Vista on a Saturday and arrived just before the farmers’ market was about to close, so I was a little worried I might miss out, but it seemed like he was willing to keep making fries as long as people were waiting!

The proprietor was totally slammed with the long line, so I didn’t get a chance to chat with him, but according to their website “Serge is from Namur, a city in the south of Belgium close to the French border; he was only 27 when he came to the States from Belgium, but he brought his love of all things Belgian and family traditions with him.” Thank you, Serge!

If you go to the Vista location, an added bonus is that you can see the beautiful entrance to the County courthouse that was designed by my mom’s neighbor, James Hubbell!

What we want to try next:

I’m curious to try the waffles, but seriously I would just eat these fries every day for the rest of my life and die happy. There’s also the truffle option, but I’m not such a big fan of truffle oil so I’d probably stick with plain. If you’re a truffle person, I’m sure they’re delicious.
